Limited Capacity filling up

In this session, we will explore a landscape shoot from evaluating our location to the final press of the shutter. We will begin by analyzing and discussing the scene as a group. We will consider the lighting, the interest (or lack of) of the sky, what focal length might be best and why, and how we will organize elements in the frame. We will consider the exposure challenges and how to capture the entire dynamic range through a single exposure or multiple exposures. We'll talk about using lines in our images, look for foreground interest, and discuss where to focus in the frame for maximum depth of field and sharpness. As we walk around we will consider varying perspectives to add unique interest and variety to the shoot. Additionally, we will discuss how creative use of settings (aperture, shutter speed) might add a creative effect in our images. Following our discussion, participants will have the opportunity to shoot and ask questions.

Learning Objectives:
1. Learn how to evaluate your scene to begin a landscape shoot (establishing the main interest in a scene and determine whether the sky or foreground deserves more room in the frame, for example).
2. Understand how different focal lengths will effect the potential images captured.
3. Learn how to choose a main focal point and organize the frame.
4. Learn ways of adding depth and interest (leading lines, foreground interest, framing, color).
5. Gain an understanding of how to deal with the exposure challenges of capturing the entire dynamic range.

This outdoor Boutique Program will take place around Pike Place Market, the Gum Wall and Post Alley, and/or the waterfront.

This urban area provides a lot of opportunities for interesting backgrounds and is only a few blocks away from the Westin. Pike Place Market is a busy urban market that is an iconic tourist destination. The Gum Wall and Post Alley provide interesting urban street scenes, as well as great color and texture. Beyond the Market, Gum Wall, and Post Alley, your group may venture down to the waterfront. The waterfront boardwalk area is a lovely place for capturing scenic shots of the sky, cityscape, and the ferris wheel. Please note that there are many steps required to get from the market to the waterfront. There is a small elevator available. It will take approximately 10-15 minutes to walk to Pike Place Market from the Westin, and the waterfront is an additional 10 minutes beyond the Market. To return to the Westin from the waterfront at the conclusion of the program (remember this walk is uphill), please budget 20-25 minutes.
