Backlighting when shooting with film is something that many photographers struggle with! In this class, I will talk about specific stocks I like to use at sunrise and sunset, and share how they can be utilized to set the tonal scene. We'll discuss shooting and posing techniques to get that glowy look while helping your subjects pose in a loving and connected way. We'll talk about my preferred metering method for correct exposure (specific to stock) and how film ratings/camera settings contribute to your desired aesthetic. Afterwards, I'll demonstrate shooting backlit with specific camera settings and positioning/posing your subjects. Finally, everyone will get a chance to shoot and ask questions while I will assist and answer questions. We will end with a short discussion on appropriate labs, directions for packaging and sending film post-shoot, what to expect from your lab, and how to best communicate with your lab.

Preferably, everyone should bring either a 35mm or medium format film camera and Kodak Portra 400 film (can also bring Kodak Portra 800 film). If you are brand new to film and would like to observe, shoot, and learn, you are certainly welcome! Please bring your digital camera and lens. Handheld meters are extremely helpful but not necessary. Students should be proficient with loading film and have a basic understanding of film concepts. There will be open Q&A throughout the discussion and shooting.

Location:
This outdoor Boutique Program will take place at Seattle Center. 

The Seattle Center requires a brief ride (approximately 2-3 minutes) on a nearby monorail train that runs on a loop and departs approximately every 10 minutes from the Westlake Center Mall (across the street from the Westin). Travel time can range from approximately 15-24 minutes, depending on group size, how quickly the group moves, and how quickly the group can board the monorail. The Seattle Center is massive with tons of usable shooting space, from green park-like areas to funky walls and sculptures. The Space Needle is located within the Seattle Center. Attendees in programs taking place at the Seattle Center will be provided a round trip ticket for the monorail at the beginning of the program. The group will travel together to the Seattle Center. After the program concludes, attendees may travel back to the Westin at their leisure.
