We all know that moment is the centerpiece of a compelling storytelling image. But what other factors do we have to consider in order to best convey a moment? In this class we will dissect the other two important elements of light and composition, and learn how to manage them while not altering the environment or directing your subjects. Join Lacey Monroe and Jessica Thomason as they photograph a family exploring a nearby outdoor location. We will begin by walking to meet the family at the location, then work with the students to identify the elements of light and environment, and identify the different ways to photograph the scene to achieve the best composition(s). Students will learn how to make micro adjustments to manage the clutter in the scene as the family does different activities.
Learning Objectives: 1. Learn how to observe the scene and determine what we need to pay attention to in order to manage our environment. For example: What type of light do we have, how do we best use it? What visual elements do we have in our scene (buildings, furniture, wall/ceiling fixtures, other persons besides the subjects we are photographing)? 2. Learn about what lens choice and camera settings would be good starting points for the scene. 3. Discuss the different compositions with which we can approach the scene, and which one would be best to convey the moments. 4. Learn how to make small adjustments to manage the foreground and background elements, while considering your subject placement.
Location: This outdoor Boutique Program will take place around Pike Place Market, the Gum Wall and Post Alley, and/or the waterfront.
This urban area provides a lot of opportunities for interesting backgrounds and is only a few blocks away from the Westin. Pike Place Market is a busy urban market that is an iconic tourist destination. The Gum Wall and Post Alley provide interesting urban street scenes, as well as great color and texture. Beyond the Market, Gum Wall, and Post Alley, your group may venture down to the waterfront. The waterfront boardwalk area is a lovely place for capturing scenic shots of the sky, cityscape, and the ferris wheel. Please note that there are many steps required to get from the market to the waterfront. There is a small elevator available. It will take approximately 10-15 minutes to walk to Pike Place Market from the Westin, and the waterfront is an additional 10 minutes beyond the Market. To return to the Westin from the waterfront at the conclusion of the program (remember this walk is uphill), please budget 20-25 minutes.
